The Carolina Artist Gallery held a reception for the opening of our new show, Pieces & Parts, on Saturday June 21, 2025. We were honored to have two of the regions great artists to be our judges for this show, Georgia Mason and Nicola Mason. They provided the following insights about the show and their judging philosophy:
"We would first like to congratulate all of the participating artists for contributing to such an innovative, exuberant, and playful exhibition. It was our great delight to study your creations and contemplate the intentions and sensibilities behind your artistry. It was difficult to decide on the awards because all of you deserve them for your pursuit of self-expression and your contributions to a long and valued tradition of taking pleasure making and in viewing visual art. And yet our task was to narrow the field and choose awards! We have done so, with great appreciation for the skill and spirit on display in Pieces & Parts."
Honorable Mention to Janet Coleman for "Birdland"

Judge's comments: Gorgeously impressionistic and textured. Arresting before one realizes the subject, and then one is all the more awed - by the seamless integration of natural elements and the punchy bits of red that pull it all together.

Honorable Mention to Penny Evans for "The Ironing Bored Goddess"

Judges's comments: A tour-de-force of a piece! Big, bold, imaginative, and wildly intricate. Love how the title plays on the board vs bored. So fun!

Third Place to Bill Fryczynski for "Convergence I"
Judge's comments: Great design in this piece. Color, shape, line, flow, variety, and subtlety. Exciting to view. The more you look, the more you see!

Second Place to Karen Mault for "Scraps - A Rokkaku Kite"

The judge's comments: Love this take on the traditional Japanese fighting kite. The rokkaku (taken from the Japanese word for six-sided) kite is ideal for visual display because of its dimensions, and this kite takes abstract art into the air. Excellent design with color, shape, and pattern. A combination of a sport, a quilt, and a flag. We'd love to see it swooping through the sky!

First Place to Lynn Abraham for "I Got You Babe"

Judge's comments: The achievement of this piece is owing to many things. Though the material is metal and - needess to say- heavy, the impression is of lift and (literally)spring. There's a wonderful geometry of space at work, and a playful repetition of shape, particularly the spiral, thjat is beautifully expressive.

Thank you to all the talented artists who contributed their pieces to our Pieces & Parts Show. Come by to see for yourself the collection of innovative and exuberant art.
