Awards were announced at the May 3rd reception for Beaches, Shores and Scapes. The Arts Council of Carteret County and the Carolina Artist Gallery were pleased to provide awards to the following artists:

Honorable Mention

"Morning on the Dunes" by Joy Park Coats

Judge's comments: The use of cool colors as shadows and warm colors as highlights adds depth, while the diagonal composition enhances the sense of movement. The directional brushstrokes guide the eye throughout the painting.

Honorable Mention

"Rusty" by Lynn Abraham

Judge's comments: Creative use of found objects. Love the repetition of the white silver and rust in

multiple locations on the sculpture.

Third Place

"Cedar Point Marsh" by Airlie Wedemayer

Judge's comments: The colors of the underpainting are complementary to the top layers and make the colors pop. The clouds and reflections guide the eye toward the focal point.

Second Place

"Piney Top" by Karen Van Gamper

Judge's comments: The repeating ripples, colors, and shapes in the landscape create a strong sense of rhythm and unity. The fidelity in rendering the reflection and asymmetrical composition made this my second choice.

First Place

"Egret Haven" by Maria Morando

Judge's comments: The use of texture seems to intentionally capture light. It draws attention to the egrets hidden in the marsh. The egrets are a striking yet subtle surprise hidden within the low contrast landscape. The delicate brushwork and use of small contrasting elements made this my top choice.

Congratulations to the Awardees and thank you to all the artists who contributed to Beaches, Shores and Scapes. The show will run till June 14th. Come by our gallery to view these pieces and all the wonderful art created by our talented local artists.

A special thank you to our judge for this show, Kristen Springle. A piece of her artwork is on display in the gallery that we invite you to view.
