Introduction to Needle Felting

Class Description:  Come paint and sculpt….with wool! In this full day workshop, students will be introduced to the basics of needle felting, working from foundational instruction on the properties of wool through the creation of small, 2-dimensional and ultimately, 3-dimensional work using special barbed needles. Students will learn about different types of wool, including which are best for various felting methods, and the versatility of wool fiber as an artistic medium.

Instruction will include:

●      how to control the placement of wool

●      how to layer and shape effectively

●      how to attach appendages and embellishments securely

●      how to firm up work

In addition to completing two small projects in class, supplies provided for this workshop will serve students well should they choose to continue their needle felting journeys at home and/or in subsequent classes. No experience necessary; simply bring your imaginations and a smile!

Instructor Name: Lisa Davis

Biography: Lisa Davis is a Connecticut native whose journey has taken her from Western Massachusetts to the heart of New York City to the mountains of northern New England and beyond. A current resident of Morehead City, her felting journey began while she and her husband owned and operated a small goat dairy and creamery in rural Vermont. Immersed in all things farming, she quickly became enamored by the versatility of wool as an artistic medium, working alongside fellow farmers and fiber artists to explore all forms of felting with the abundant supply of wool from neighboring farms. She has been needle felting for the past 15 years. She is also an oil pastel artist, a writer, and a lover of all creative endeavors. She is formally trained with an interdisciplinary degree in communications, marketing and graphic design from the University of Massachusetts.
