A retired high school art and pottery instructor, he earned a BFA in Ceramics from East Carolina University and an MFA in Three-Dimensional Design from Illinois State University. Throughout

a lifelong career as an artist, educator, and coach, Gibson has remained committed to the creation of functional pottery and custom furniture rooted in craftsmanship and thoughtful design. His wheel-thrown ceramic work features clean, minimalist forms that serve as a foundation for expressive painted and carved surfaces. Drawing inspiration from the coastal landscape, wind, and ocean, his impressionistic designs bring movement and energy to each piece. Gibson’s work reflects a balance between function and artistry, celebrating the beauty and character of handmade objects.

My work explores the balance between form and surface through functional pottery that combines clean, wheel-thrown shapes with expressive painted and carved coastal imagery. Inspired by the constant movement and changing character of the wind and ocean, I use color, texture, and intuitive carving to bring energy and motion to each vessel. Rooted in a lifelong commitment to teaching and studio practice, my work reflects a dedication to craftsmanship, curiosity, and making.
